"Hampton Roads" is a nautical term meaning "protected anchorage" or "a safe harbor". It is also the name for the Southeast region of Virginia.

Situated on the east right by the Atlantic Ocean, Hampton Roads is where the James, Nansemond and Elizabeth rivers pour into the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. With the world's largest natural harbor, Hampton Roads' ports have played an important role in the region's history and economy.

Historically, Hampton Roads in the birthplace of Colonial America and it includes the cities of Chesapeake, Franklin, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, and Williamsburg; and the counties of Gloucester, Isle of Wight, James City, Mathews, Southampton, Surry and York; and Currituck in North Carolina.

Apartment communities range from resort-like situated upon one of the many waterways, bays or lakes, to high rise city living. The rental rates are above average, ranging from the low $600's for a modern 1 bedroom to $3,000 for a choice high rise 2000+ square foot apartment in a city. Many single family homes are available to rent or lease in Hampton Roads. Reportedly, the cost of living in Chesapeake and Virginia Beach are notably higher.

The choice of where to live in Hampton Roads will largely determine the area of search for appropriate rental properties. Choices range between several significant cities to plush ocean view communities. Many of these are available as rental properties.

The entire population of Hampton Roads is just under two million, making it a well populated though uncrowned, choice area of the country.

Although crime in Hampton Roads seems to be lower then the national averages, in 2006, the news revealed an increase in home invasions, particularly involving elderly, and single women living alone. Since 2006, there has been no notable report of this being a continuing trend.

The author has read reports of higher than average utility prices, however utility costs are rising all over the country, and we have heard no one in any part of the country who has been happy paying these increased expenses.

All in all, the Hampton Roads area is of great historic significance, boasts the world's largest natural harbor, and is home to large areas of highly sought after real estate. In future articles, the author intends to further pursue living in Hampton Roads.
